Hey folks, I’ve got raised beds in my backyard and I keep noticing the soil dries out way faster than the ground around them. I water them in the morning, and by noon it’s almost bone dry. The garden soil nearby stays pretty moist though. Anyone else dealt with this? Is it something about the soil mix or just exposure? Just wondering if I’m watering wrong or if there’s some trick to keeping raised bed soil from disappearing so quickly. Thanks!
Hi Christine, raised beds often dry out faster because they have better drainage and more exposure to air and sun compared to ground soil. The soil mix might also be lighter, with more compost or perlite, which can cause quicker drying. You might try watering more deeply or more frequently, or adding mulch on top to help retain moisture. Also, consider using drip irrigation or soaker hoses to keep the moisture consistent without overwatering.
Thanks so much for the tips, Franz! I hadn’t thought much about the soil mix being lighter. I’ll check what’s in there and see if I need to tweak it a bit. Adding mulch sounds like an easy fix to try right away, especially with summer heat picking up. I’ll also look into setting up a drip system since I’m worried about watering enough but not drowning the plants. Appreciate the advice!
