Start by collecting trimmings. Fir, pine, holly, and spruce are all good choices. The pieces should be 6-12" in length.

Next, prepare the backing. Cut the bottom out of a standard nursery flat. Ask your local garden center for leftover flats.

Decide which corner of the backing will be the top of the swag. Start wiring trimmings to the outside edge of the backing. Make sure the stems are facing the top corner of the backing.

Continue adding trimmings, starting at the bottom and layering them upward. Add enough trimmings until the backing is no longer visible.

Once you've filled the backing, add some flair with additional interesting clippings, like berries, cones or leaves.

Flip the swag over and attach a wire loop to the back and it's ready to hang. Spray the swag with an anti-transpirant to extend its life.
