Some vines can be displayed well on totem poles made from bamboo and moss. Start by laying out a piece of plastic mesh approximately 1' by 2'. Cover the mesh with a 2" thick layer of moist sphagnum moss.

Arrange a bamboo stake lengthwise in the center of the moss. Roll up the mesh, so the bamboo stake is secured in the center. Be sure that 6-8" of the stake is sticking out of the bottom.

English ivy works great for this type of planting. It is fast growing and climbs well. Plant three or four small ivy plugs around the pole. Weave the vines in and out of the mesh. Thoroughly saturate the soil and the pole. Keep the moss moist; this will encourage the ivy to establish itself quicker.
