What you need:
  • Half whiskey barrel
  • 5'x5' pond liner
  • Staple gun
  • Utility knife
A half whiskey barrel makes a great water gardening container. Before planting in the barrel, it's a good idea to install a flexible pond liner. This prevents toxins from leaching out of the wood into the water and harming your plants or fish.

A 5'x5' pond liner fits perfectly into a half whiskey barrel. Center the liner over the barrel. Gently press the liner into the bottom of the barrel. Make sure that a little excess liner sticks out all the way around the rim.

Fill the barrel half full with water. This forces the liner to conform to the bottom of the barrel. To properly fit the liner, pleat it all the way around the rim.

Fold the excess liner over the rim and staple it with 1/2" staples. The staples should be no more than 1" below the rim of the barrel.

Once the liner is securely fastened, trim off the excess liner with a sharp knife or razor blade. Leave 1-2" of overhang.

When you finish trimming the liner, make one more pass with the stapler. Concentrate on securing the pleats. Dump out the water and you're ready to start planting a water garden.
