Water hyacinths are very easy to propagate through division. During the winter months water hyacinths will grow runners that are easily separated from the parent plant.

Use a sharp knife or pruning shears to remove the new plant. Cut straight through the stem that connects it to the parent plant.

Next, trim any dead or dying leaves from the plant. Water hyacinths are not cold hardy, so if you live in an area that is subject to freezing temperatures you will need to bring the plants indoors during the winter months. An aquarium with fluorescent lighting will work just fine for over wintering water hyacinths.
