Use a sharp knife or razor blade to cut X-shaped slits in the fabric. The type of planting that you are doing will determine how far apart you make your cuts.

Once all of the plants are in place, mulch over the top of the landscape fabric with bark or decorative mulch. The landscape fabric will keep any weeds from sprouting up in your garden and unlike plastic, water will readily penetrate it.
